The FirstRand Foundation, and the FNB Fund specifically have made a significant contribution to the education sector in South Africa to date. This has predominantly been in the areas of Early Childhood Development, Hospice, and Tertiary Bursaries.
Increasing awareness as to the importance of interventions at Primary School level has led to the inception of a Primary Education Programme to roll out in 2013. Ten primary schools in each of two KwaZulu-Natal Education Districts, namely the Umlazi and uMgungundlovu districts, have been identified as partner schools in the programme and will benefit from interventions funded by the FirstRand Foundation over a period of three years.
Objectives of the funding programme
The objectives of the programme are as follows:
- To equip principals and school teams with the tools necessary to effectively manage curriculum delivery;
- To provide a solid educational foundation for learners;
- To engage community members in the life of the schools and the learners therein;
- To improve the learning outcomes of students in selected schools
- To ensure that barriers to learning are addressed; and
- To enhance the pedagogical and content knowledge of teachers in order that they are able to impart the curriculum to their learners in an effective way
The three strategic focus areas of the programme are school leadership, barriers to teaching and learning, and teacher support. In the first year of the programme (2013/2014), the programme will addressschool leadership and barriers to education, introducing a teacher support element the following year.
School Leadership: Leadership programmes would take into account principals of the various schools as well as the school management teams and School Governing Body. The leadership programme should contain a workshop/coursework element, as well as an element of practical, ongoing mentorship which has proven to deepen the efficacy of leadership programmes. The focus should be on management skills and, importantly, effective curriculum management, which link closely with the development of schools as organisations.
Barriers to teaching and learning: It is unquestionable that poor performance by learners is often attributable to issues outside of the school itself. This is highlighted in the DBE document Guidelines for Inclusive Learning Programmes, which identifies the following barriers to learning and development:
- Disability as a barrier
- Lack of parental/community recognition and involvement
- Socio-economic barriers (such as nutrition)

- Complete the FNB Primary Education 2013 funding application form;
- Please ensure that you make it clear whether you are applying for funding for Barriers to Education or School Leadership; this is for 10 primary schools in Fezile Dabi and 10 primary schools in Lejweleputswa education districts in the Free State province.
