An internship programme is an intervention by the City of Johannesburg to address the growing demand by tertiary institutions for students to undergo on-the-job exposure as a pre-requisite to acquire an academic qualification,or as a requirement after the acquisition of an academic qualification,to obtain experiential training. The City is committed to provide work-based training for students.

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ), Group Communication and Marketing Department has the following Internship opportunities available for a period NOT exceeding eighteen (18) months. The details are as follows:

Graphic Design

Appointment Requirements:

  • Matric (NQF4) plus certificate or diploma in Graphic Design or relevant field at NQF 6(subjects that include visual arts may be an advantage);
  • Must be creative and have know-how of image processing software;
  • Portfolio of most recent work/assignments must be included in the application;
  • Computer literacy (MS Office applications);
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite/Adobe Creative Cloud is an advantage;
  • Must be able to work extended hours as and when required;
  • Open to applicants not older than 35; and
  • Only City of Joburg residents will be considered.

Primary Function: Provide a graphic design service as well as administrative support within the Marketing Unit of Group Communication and Marketing Department.

Key Learning Areas: Conferring with clients and key stakeholders of the department to determine design requirements.Designing client proposals and working with clients to ensure that the end-product meets their business objectives and requirements. Briefing and advising clients on compliance with the City’s corporate identity.Developing innovative illustrations, graphics and layouts in a variety of formats for different platforms, and using graphic design tools including design software. Producing drafts for review and presenting final designs for sign-off by clients.

Copywriter / Journalism Grad / Intern

Appointment Requirements:

  • Matric (NQF4) plus a certificate, diploma or degree in journalism or copy-writing at NQF 6level;
  • Must be creative, detail-oriented and able to write coherently (i.e. good grammar and punctuation skills);
  • Basic understanding of the inner workings of a newsroom and editorial processes;
  • Basic understanding of how to leverage social media, find out things and get in contact with people and spot trends;
  • Ability to write and translate content into at least three (3)different official languages;
  • Computer literacy (MS Office applications);
  • Must be able to work extended hours as and when required;
  • Open to applicants not older than 35; and
  • Only City of Joburg residents will be considered.Primary Function: Ensure journalist/copy writing service and administrative support within the Group Communication and Marketing Department.

Key Learning Areas: Generating content and contributing to content production initiatives for various platforms managed by the department (e.g. Mahungu Ya Vatirhi, CoJ messages, bulk SMSes, the City’s website and digital screens). Applying the rules of grammar, fixing ‘lifeless’ language, as well as assessing and critiquing the underlying structure of a document. Recognising and dealing with plagiarism and copyright infringement.

TV and Radio Presenter Grad / Intern

Appointment Requirements:

  • Matric (NQF4)plus a certificate, diploma or degree in TV/Radio presenting / communication / journalism/ creative arts / media or films tudies or any other related course;
  • Any experience in performing arts/drama, music technology, sound technology, journalism or public relations will be an advantage;
  • Ability to introduce and interview guests, linking segments and generally holding a show together;
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions from the production team;
  • Ability to learn a script or sometimes perform without formal preparation;
  • Ability to think on your feet and ad-lib or deviate from the script where necessary;
  • Computer literacy (MS Office applications);
  • Must be able to work extended hours as and when required;
  • Must be able to engage a varied audience and create an original show each time they host;
  • Must be well-informed and know how to collect information from many different sources or channels;
  • Open to applicants not older than 35; and

Key Learning Areas: Practical experience in presenting or hosting on TV and radio.Researching. Planning the general direction of a show. Writing and scripting. Conducting interviews with guests in person (either live or recorded beforehand) or on the telephone. Reading from a script or autocue, or improvising.

Marketing Grad / Intern

Appointment Requirements:

  • Matric (NQF4)plus a degree or diploma in Marketing,Communications, PR or related field;
  • Ability to create and develop new innovative ways to communicate the City’s messages to existing customers and residents;Strong sense of responsibility for delivery and meeting of deadlines;
  • Skilled and creative copy-writing;
  • Expert marketing skills and ability to implement new and innovative marketing strategies;
  • Computer literacy (MS Office applications);
  • Must be able to work extended hours as and when required;
  • Open to applicants not older than 35; and
  • Only City of Joburg residents will be considered.

Primary Function: Provide marketing and copy-writing service as well as administrative support within the Marketing Unit of Group Communication and Marketing Department.

Appointment Requirements:

  • Matric (NQF4) plus a degree or diploma in multi-media design, graphic design or a related field;
  • Artistic portfolio of most recent accomplished work to be included in application;
  • Artistic abilities and knowledge of digital video, web design and graphic design concepts;
  • Writing skills and radio production skills will be an added advantage;
  • Creativity and knowledge of how to design high-quality products;
  • Computer literacy and competence in design and image manipulation software;
