Here is an idea:

What if we could to come together and share information with many of youngsters with matric certificates who are sitting at home so that they can go to varsity / college?

One would think that it is impossible for everybody to get their careers off the ground through learnerships. Because there are quite a few of them. Looking at our society at large one would also think that staying at home is not new. That before this generation many others have been through the frustrating experience of waking everyday with little to nothing do to take one’s career to the next level. But the bottom line is, they got up and did something with their lives.

As such, if  you’ve stayed at home for a long time and one day decided you are going to do something with your life, would you share your experience with others in order for them to follow your trail?

So, here is what we are going to do for the next two months:

Instead of sitting at home and trying to get one of the few learnership opportunities (frustrating), let’s encourage our little brothers and sisters to go to university / college.

Here is how you can help:

  • If you stayed at home for a while after you passed matric and later managed to go college/varsity, how did you do it?
  • How/where did you get funding?
  • Can someone in a similar position like you were follow the steps you did and still go college/varsity?
  • If you could summarise the process into a few steps, what are the main things to do?

This is not limited to the above possibilities, if you know a way that others can get funding to go to varsity /  college, you can share what you know too.

So far here is what can be of use to someone sitting at home:

Problem Fund How to get it What do you Need
Lack funds but want to go to varsity NSFAS Apply for admission to a university of your choice and enquire about NSFAS. Affidavit
Want to be a teacher but lack funds NSFAS + The Department of Education http://www.dbe.gov.za/
Want to go to varsity but your marks are poor Consider going to a finishing school and improve your results

Please use the comments section below to share information…

Update: Since we want to keep a list useful information could you PLEASE not leave a comment if you are only writing about your problem (Example: I have been sitting at home for x number of years etc… That doesn’t help anyone).

Thanks.

I matriculated in 2011. I registered with North West university (mafikeng campus),with the help of my geography teacher. I couldn’t go the next year because I didn’t get NSFAS or funding. I stayed at home for two years, then decided to enroll at a college and I got NSFAS funding, and now I am busy with my N6.

Please guys if you have any information share with the rest of us we need more solutions here than problems let’s open up this platform for people who have information that we can feed on.
If you are sitting at home with a matric qualification and you’ve been looking for a job for a very long time now, please go to a FET college and register. Bursaries are put in place guys for such cases, they should cover everything for you some even meals. If you failed matric you can go to a finishing school and upgrade or enroll on an NVC course also in an FET.
If you are looking for an Apprenticeship, Learnership or Internship you are blessed to be reading this because it means you have access to the net. Keep looking don’t give up this site advertises legitimate posts.
Don’t stop there browse the net for companies that offer opportunities for candidates on your course you’ll find that most companies now allow you to create your own portfolio in their website where you can create your account and upload your qualifications there. Login from time to time because some don’t always appear on this site.
As much everything is done on the net now guys don’t be lazy to hand deliver your CV’s not all of them are transformed into this new system. You may have to call some of them and ask where you can apply for positions. Don’t forget to pray to God guys surely his eye is not blind upon our toiling.

I am 29 completed matric in 2005 and upgraded in 2006 and applied at FET for IT I couldn’t finish 3 subject because they wanted supplementary fee and I did have it and volunteered at some company and soon they hired me. I was earning even close to 1500 so still I cud not afford to register for those failed subjects, then I applied at unisa and did not qualify for a diploma cos of my matric results so I applied for a lower qualification but could continue with it because of fees and I was phased out, tried to apply for jobs with no luck, so I decided to save a little to apply again for a short course to get a better job and also I was thinking of going back to FET to do Nated course in office administration or management assistant so I don’t know if doing that I will be falling back and at unisa I tried to reapply with my upgraded certificate but they did not approve it, i’m in total confusion and don’t know which wat to take , please advice.

It’s too late to do anything now. It is best to apply the year before.

So, anything you want to do now can only be done in July or in Jan next year?

Varsity open application for next year towards the end of April. And colleges open towards the end of March.

    • The Ron says:

    Hello All

I did my matric in 2013 and I passed it with 5 A’s. Fortunately I was accepted to study at UKZN for B soc sc Psychology (2014). Now the problem is I did not apply for funding in time, and due to my background I was not able to buy study books… Yes I failed and I dropped out. I wanted to commit suicide, but I could not due to the misery I would leave behind for my grandma and two sisters.

Last year 2015 I was not studying. An advice on where to go from here would really help y’all. Thank you.

i am in the same situation 🙁 its really sad.
Having an admission to varsity but lack of resources. If u found a solution please help a sister out

      • Lee says:

its simple my sister all you have to do after being accepted by the university is to enquire about financial assistance like your NSFAS.. you can go to their office at the university you applied to and submit the required documents. they will pay for your registration, res, fees, textbooks and food allowance.. I studied Mechanical Engineeting via NSFAS and today I’m a Learner Technician at Eskom it’s possible.

  • AUGUSTINE says:

    Hello

Guys I did no seat at home after matric I became fortunate through NSFAS funding. If you just seating at home with grade 10, 11, and 12 you can go to a government FET College. You will receive your education free of charge as long as you do not fail, they will pay your tuition for you.

I have a project that I do on my own it’s called “take two seated and move them”. what I basically do on this project is to motivate at least two ladies who have been seating at home for long. I ensure that they get admission to college or university each year. This process makes it very easy for me to help newly matriculants since they still have fresh minds.

    Hello

I matriculated in 2011 with Bachelor’s and in 2012 enrolled for Diploma at one of the best universities in the country. And I graduated in record time, it’s been year since I graduated and all the responses for jobs applied to are regretted.

You know when we all at varsity we have the mentality that we won’t struggle to get jobs. But I dd everything right as they say got involved at varsity in Co curricular activities but still nothing.

I got to point where I just got tired of applying and depleting out of bundles and sat at home feeling depressed. But after reading all your amazing stories I realized self pity won’t get me a job. I have been accepted to do Btech next year .

It’s amazing how one persons struggle can be an inspiration to others.
To all other young people Good things come to those who persevere and work hard. God is with us through life hardships

      • zanele says:

site editor I do think about upgrading but my problem is money I asked at Star school 1subject is about R3000 dats why I need job atleast I will budget dat money If am working, but if they can accept me to study teaching at any university around jouburg atleast i can try busaries

        • Siyabonga says:

          Hi Zanele
I am pleased of your willingness to upgrade your Grade 12 results. I normally advise, even though there may be implications, that pupils must go back and re-register for grade 12 and study full time if your school permit. Think about a position where one will be working for one (1) year fundraising money to upgrade their results in the following year; that is 2 years down the drain whereas going back to school full time might only take you one year to complete and that will save you time.

        • Tebogo says:

If didn’t get help go to your nearest department of education for info cos what I know is they allow people to increase/upgrade their marks for free.. They write around June every year
